Cardiff University Doctor makes headway in brain research

Dr Alexander Leemans, of Cardiff University’s Brain Research Imaging Centre, has been awarded first prize in The Brain Expert Competition, a leading research programme backed by the General Electric Company.

Dr Leemans, of Cardiff’s School of Psychology, has pioneered a process of Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

The process allows the human brain to be scanned and examined in minute detail, in turn allowing closer study of the brain’s white matter, which acts as the wiring of the central nervous system.

In the past, slight movements of the human head while images of it were being recorded could render the results unclear.

But the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technique allows clearer images to be taken of the human brain, a breakthrough which Dr Leemans said “could have potentially serious consequences in life saving surgery, for example.”

Cardiff University’s School of Psychology is recognised as one of the largest and most advanced in the United Kingdom.

The School is the first to be awarded a double accolade of merit.
